Sacramento Northern Railway.
Posted by tiny_tank on Thursday, April 5, 2007 5:55 PM
I am a new comer to model railroading. I have recently purchased Images of Rail: Sacramento Northern Railway by Paul C. Trimble. I would like to base my freelanced railroad on the SN. Where could I find more information on what industries were served, besides the Steel Mill in Pittsburg, CA, and the farms. Also, what crops were hauled and what frieght cars were used in 1948-52.

Thank you for the information.

As memory serves me, Model Railroader had an article about the Sacramento Northern as a "railroad you can model" 30 or 40 years ago with scenes along the war, also scale drawings for a Sacramento Northern private car or parlor car.  Use the article search function on this website.

The July 1970 MR has the article by Bill Middelton, mentioned above. Photocopies of the Donald Sims article about the SN yard at 40th and Shafter in Oakland, from the Fall 1959 issue of Model Trains are also available from Kalmbach. You should also try to get hold of the Interurban Press book on the SN, reprinted by Pentrex, and the recent SN Gallery pictorial album by Shade Tree books.

Cheers,

Mark.

If you look through the members names on this forum, you'll come across a person named JETROCK, who is, I believe, also the author of the book you have.  He's an expert on the Sacramento Northern, and also a Docent at the California Railroad Museum here in Sacramento, CA.  He would be a great source of information to you.
