I'm wondering if the UP ever put the shield on tenders, and if so, when?
[/quote]

In 1926, the 9000's , 4-12-2 had the UP shield on the tender when they were new. Numerous pictures of the 9000 class with the Overland Shield are in the Motive Power of the Union Pacific book by Kratville and ranks. The shield is pictured on the several classes of engines including the a 4-6-2, a 2-8-8-0 and a switcher 0-6-0. All of the pictures illustrated were taken in the 1920's era. This shield was on some classes of engines durning that time period and the 2-10-2's might have used the shield also, but I could not find any pictures of the 2-10-2's with it. The shield was used for several years but most late thirties pictures do not show it.

In general, the UP did have some engines with the shield on the coal portion of the tender, but not all of them got it and the 2-10-2 is a question mark?
