Santa Fe Super Chief, 1960's...
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 7, 2003 11:43 AM
Getting ready to plan my first HO layout, and wanted to do the Santa Fe Super Chief Passenger train. I am looking for the locomotive and passenger cars used when this train was going from Los Angeles to the east coast in 1963. I've picked this era since this is my first memory of trains when I was seeing my Grandparents off from L.A. to Pittsburg in 1963 (I was 3 years old). I remember it pretty vividly since it was the day JFK was killed, but I also remember how beautiful that train was.

Any info on who makes this HO scale would be great. I've been thinking about my first trains for a long time, and decided to go with something that always made an impression on me the most.

Thanks

Cindy

Walthers will be producing the last edition of the Santa Fe's Super Chief. The cars they will be producing will include a baggage car, the ACF RPO car, a Pine Series Budd 10-6 sleeper, either the Pullman Standard or ACF Regal Series 4-4-2 ( 4 compartment, 4 double bedroom 2 drawing room )sleeper, a 1339 Series Pullman Standard Lounge Dorm, 600 Series Pullman Standard Diner, 500 Series Pullman Standard Pleasure Dome and 4-1 (4 Compartment 1 Drawing Room) ACF Regal Series Lounge OBS. This is the 1950 edition. For the sixties, you will need 2 Pine Series 10-6 sleepers, and 2 Regal Series sleepers, the Pleasure Dome and the 600 Series Diner. Also, 11 Bedroom Indian Series Sleepers (rebuilt from Pullman Standard 24 Roomette) sleepers and ACF 10-6 Palm Series sleepers. The first cars mentioned will be produced by Walthers in 2004 in plastic. For the last two series, you will need brass cars by The Coach Yard (especially for the 11 Bedroom Sleeper). To get a plausable Palm Series 10-6 sleeper, you can use Concors 10-6 sleeper and exhange the Budd roof with a Pullman Standard roof. The car won't be accurate as the roomettes should be on the vestibuile end of the car. For Locomotives, you can use Athearns FP-45s or the Genesis F-7s in passenger warbonnet scheme. The FP-45s would be used if modeling that late 60's. No baggage cars would be used, as the train was combined with the Hi-Level equipped El-Capitan. good luck modeling, Ch
