Amtrak modified Budd cars?

Looks like Amtrak did a bit of kitbashing of their own in the late 70's. I found this pic today and thought they would make an interesting kitbashing project for use with my old Athearn HO RDC's. Can anyone provide further info on these units? See the pic here.

These are ex-Penn Central cars. According to the PC page, "Penn Central also operated the former New Haven "Roger Williams" Budd cars with the diesel faces. Here is car 28, seen at Wellesley Hills, MA, in May 1974, after being relettered for Amtrak."

According to Wikipedia.com, "Circa 1956, the New Haven had a special RDC train built named "Roger Williams". It consisted of 2-single-ended cab units, and several intermediate cars to make a complete train set. The units even were fitted with third-rail shoes and associated gear for operation into GCT, though this was short lived. In the New Haven's later years, the set was broken up, and used with regular New Haven RDCs, and was used into the 1980s by Amtrak. They're not Amtrak modified cars, those are the New Haven's Roger Williams end units from its special train-set.

It was ordered and built special for the NHRR around 1954/55. Had two end units (140-141) and several intermediate cars. It lasted until the late 1980's after serving, NHRR, PC, Amtrak...

The Roger Williams was a six-car trainset which consisted of the two cab coaches (140-141) and four intermediate coaches (160-163).  One of the intermediate coaches later had its interior modified to include a snack bar.  All were fully powered (2 Detroit Diesel engines) although the intermediate coaches did not have control cabs.
