Am I right in thinking that there were a few Hi.nosed GP30s???
If so who had them please?

Norfolk Southern has/had GP38s with high noses: http://rr-fallenflags.org/ns/ns5002amr.jpg.

Unfortunately, I don't think they had any GP30s. Their predecessor, N&W had a few.

Southern RR also had some. The first photo is really a GP30, but it was wrecked and rebuilt with a GP35-style cab.

You didn't ask, but the Wheeling & Lake Erie had high-nose GP35s...some of which are still around.

To the best of my knowledge, only the Southern had any hi-nose GP30s. I think most of them were still on the roster at the time of the merger with N&W, but I don't how many (if any) are still around.

Western Pacific ordered Hi-Nose GP30s, but the order was so late in the production run that the units were delivered as GP35s. The road went for the Lo-Nose option as the Hi-Nose units would have cost more.

Both N&W and Southern had high nose GP30's, and a few made it into NS paint. To wit:

Guess I goofed! I had spaced the N&W GP30s completely. I was only thinking of Southern because I remembered an old magazine article about modeling the Southern GP30 and how the cab had one side longer than the other and they didn't use drop grab irons on the ends, they were straight. Those differences made an impression obviously.
The sad part is that I have pre-NS photos that I took of N&W GP30s in the Frankfort, Indiana yard! DUH!! Sorry about that. They do look nice in the NS paint scheme though. Did any make it to other lines with the hi-nose still intact, or did they only become NS or scrap?

Southern and N&W were the ONLY roads to have hi-nose GP30's. UP had 40 GP30B units. Southern had 120 units, 2 GP30's that were wrecked (#'s 2526 and 2641), rebuilt with the GP30 mechanicals under a GP35 body (since GP30 production had ended at that time). Look more closely at that photo of #2526 and you should notice the entire body matches a GP35, not just the cab.I don't have a N&W book, but it looks like NS had 164 after the merger, with 43 high hood N&W units and 9 more N&W former NKP units with low noses. 908 GP30's were built (2 of which went to Canada) + 40 B units (all of which went to UP). Soo line, Milwaukee Road, and GM&O units rode on traded in Alco Type B trucks. Only 8 of UP's B units had steam generators, none of the rest did. Most of NS's GP30's were retired in the '89-'91 time frame.

W&LE's high-nose GP35's are all secondhand from SR, their road numbers and Type B trucks are the giveaway.

Some of the W&LE GP35s are still in Southern's "Tuxedo" scheme, but with W&LE lettering on the long hood.

Always remember that the casing over the cab on high hood units terminates further back than on low nose units. A lot of people forget that when they build models of HH GP-30s.
