CSX U28b
Posted by BigBlueConrail on Thursday, April 20, 2006 4:08 PM
I have a csx U28b with a road number of 5323. I have searched long and hard for evidence that csx had U28b locomotives. But nothing turns up. Does anyone know if csx had a U28b?

The L&N had five U28Bs that were inherited by Seaboard System on 1/1/83. That puts them at age 16 into the Seaboard System roster. It is extremely doubtful that these units were around a few years later when CSX was formed.

No, CSX did not have any U28B's. 5323 was a U30B.

CSX 5323 was formerly SBD 5540. SBD 5540 was formerly L&N #2504 a U28B built in 11/66. The L&N U28Bs were rebuilt to U30B specs, but retained the U28B carbody, so yes the CSX had "rebuilt" U28Bs and the roster above does not reflect the unit's true history. The roster did show CSX still had four of the rebuilt U28Bs #5319-5321, and 5323. L&N data from Louisville & Nashville Diesel Locomotives by Castner, Flanary, and Gordon. [8D]
