On30 - USA style

[?]I live in the UK and am putting together a model railway in UK OO. I have recently been very impressed with some On30 stock in my local shop. It sort of looks the part and I am thinking of diversifying into a comparable layout in that style. The thing that puts me off is that over here there does not appear to be much available for us Brits to purchase. Whats the score over the water? If anyone can find the time to let me know the extent of interest in On30 with you I would much appreciate it. TTFN

On30 has a fair following in this country. The back-woods, old time feel appeals to a lot of model railroaders. Bachmann manufactures a good deal of rolling stock and some locomotives. If I am not mistaken, Broadway limited also manufactures several locomotives. Several manufacturers produce On30 track, including Peco. Do some googling and I'm sure you'll find a lot of information. Also, see if you can somehow pick up a copy of, "Narrow Guage and Short Line Gazette," magazine. It has tons of infomation on narrow guage modeling.

There is more to narrow gauge than backwoods. In its "golden age" operation was as good as any standard gauge shortline.

I think everyone does that. We should petition someone to change the spelling. The spelling police are always jumping on that misspell.

Model Railroading magazine offers an annual On30 special book, it's available now from their website. Not sure if they will ship overseas but you can see.

Otherwise beyond what's mentioned there are some kits etc. that are available in either On30 or On3 (i.e. 3' gauge). NG&SL Gazette would be a good source of info.

Well, I've just spent a pleasant 45 minutes on your site Harold and am suitably impressed. In fact the only reason I am not in it right now is that here our phones are still steam powered and my wife wants to phone her pal in Barrow in Furness (whilst the tide is out!). Lots of On30 items are still scratchbuild or modified from HO scale items. It's the scratchbuilders paradise. A good starting place is the On30 webring. http://o.webring.com/hub?ring=on30webring Fred
