Where could I find? or How would I?

Hi,
Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a business car like this with smooth sides in HO? Please note the open platform at the end of the car. I know Overland Models had/has one but I can't afford brass.



If there isn't a way to buy one, what would I start with to kitbash one?

Any help or info would be appreciated.

Several companies make brass car sides that, combined with a core kit from Train Station Products, could be used to model this car. Stay away from the ECW core kit, as it's pretty crude.

You could also splice together walls from Rivarossi passenger car shells. This takes some effort, as the Rivarossi walls are molded to the floor. But, once the walls are cut free, it's pretty easy to cut them up, and rearrange things. I'm going through this right now to build an ex-PRR PS124 sleeper.

This is one of the business cars run by Union Pacific on their excursion trains. The name of this car is "Cheyenne". Other names are: Arden, Feather River, Kenefick, North Platte, Selma, Shoshone, & St. Louis. They have an open platform or balcony on the rear of the car. You can read about them at UPRR.com but for some reason when I click on the image it gives me a "page not found" error.

You have to look under the Union Pacific category.

I know that Kato makes a similar car in HO but it has corrugated sides. I can't seam to find anything that doesn't need a lot of kitbashing.

If your UP Business Car absolutely has to be smooth side, I really can't help you. If you're willing to compromise a little, KATO makes a really great Business Car with fluted side and open rear platform. I have one (B&O), it looks great,and is a superb performer.

Rapido of Canada has annouced a release of lightweight passenger cars due out this June. The first ones are a coach and sleeper. I beleive the others should follow. There is an add in the latest MR about these cars.
Check it out, may be worth the wait.

The Rapido cars will not do you a bit of good in regards to modeling that particular business car. Thay are Canadian prototype passenger cars that don't come close to what you need. As far as kitbashing business cars, I considered kitbashing Santa Fe business car "Topeka", but after considering the work and materials involved, I decided to break down and purchase a Coach Yard model. It is one of the best purchases I have made, and well worth the money. I have on recently seen a couple of the UP business cars on eBay, so keep a sharp eye out.

And the Kato car is based on a CB&Q prototype.
