Ash Pit Gantry Cranes
Posted by jlester2 on Saturday, February 18, 2006 8:02 PM
I would like to model an Ash Pit Gantry Crane similar to the ones used by the Union Pacific in Green River, Wy. and Ogden,Ut. My understanding is that they were manufactured by a company called Whitting. Does anyone have an idea where I might find pictures, plans or diagrams?

jlester have you tried a google search/ or a search in the index of magazines located at the top of the page? also you might want to get these books by kalmbach engine servicing facilities and ho trackside structures you can build, also the carstens book locomotive terminals & rr structures.

also try this site out for pics www.rr-fallenflags.org

hope this helps

Tom,

I haved tried a google search, the index of magazine files, and the 3 books you suggested. There was one article pertaining to Whiting Overhead Crane, but as concerning a small transfer facility. I will probably have to base my structure off of this article and a few photos where the crane was not the main subject of the photo. I will try the fallen flags.org.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Tom,

I tried the UP Historical Society and UP Museum in Council Bluffs, Ia. No luck at either place.

hmmmmmmmm the UP has an active steam servise program with 4-8-4 844 in service not sure where in cheyenne they are located. if possible try to find a book on the UP steam era from your LHS or an on line book store. or contact the local historical societies in both Green River, Wy and Ogden, Ut. or even the museums in both cities as well, or perhaps a model railroad club.

I hope you have better luck there cause i'm running out of ideas

i do apologize that my suggestions and your efforts havent paid off for you as of yet

Tom,

I talked with Mr. Kratville last Saturday. He had no pictures, but recommended I get in touch with Mr. Brommley at the UP Museum again. I did, and will see where I get.

Thanks, Lester
