I am starting to build an N guage layout modelling the above railroad. Can anyone help me in the following, I would like to run an Empire Builder but need help with the consist. I note that there are brass etched overlays (M & R ) for UP passenger cars and some for SP&S but few for Gt. Northern. Could I use some of the overlays for Gt N cars or are there huge differences. I have some C&NW cars which I believe were purchased by The Gt. N. can these be used in the consist.
Many thanks in advance for help in this matter

Well for prototype info I'd start with the "usual suspects" - Great Northern Ry. Historical Society, books like "Color Guide to Great Northern Freight and Passenger Equipment" and "Great Northern: Lines East" and/or "Great Northern Lines West".

Bass Car Sides makes etched brass sides for the complete GN EB in HO. I'm not sure about N but I know they've duplicated a lot of their HO line in N. The ex-CNW cars were largely used on secondary trains (Seattle-Portland pool trains, Internationals, etc) and would not generally be found on the EB (Never say never!)

Course I suppose it depends on when your layout is set - the 1929 Empire Builder was quite a bit different than the 1969 EB !! [:P] By the sixties GN had bought used cars from several roads including CNW and I think C&O(??). I know they even bought some fluted - side stainless steel cars that they left pretty much 'as is' except for painting the letterboards big sky blue and relettering them.
