These engines were originally owned by the Virginian, then New Haven, Penn Central, and Conrail.

They were briefly Norfolk & Western property after the merger with the VGN and prior to their sale to the NH.

They were not E33's until PC.

In 1957 they were EL-C on the VGN.
On the NH they were EF-4.
Only in PC and CR were they E33.

On the NH and later PC and CR they were used in pairs with a buss wire in heavy freight service.

They were never passenger units, as far as I know.

Also, the first link in the previous posts show E44's as well (PRR units), and the second link incorrectly says the NH/PC merger was in 1968 - it did not occur until 1/1/1969.

E33 's were 3300 hp. E44's were 4400 HP. All E33's and the first 60 of an order of 66 E44's had liquid cooled Ignitron Rectifiers to convert the AC to DC for the traction motors. The trucks had DC traction motors like a diesel. The last 6 E44's were built with air cooled Silcon Diode Rectifers. The first 60 were rebuilt to solid state as the tubes failed. All the E33's has the liquid cooled tubes and were not converted to solid state. The New Haven got 12 units (11 and 1 for parts) from the Viginian (N&W) in 1963. They passed to Penn Certral and Conrail. The E44's were bult in 1959. They were rated at 5000 hp after the rebuild and reclassed as E44a. The E33's had 98,500 lbs tractive effort and the E44's has 89,000 lb. Max speed was 65 mph for a E33 and 70 mph for the E44. Both were used only in freight service. The weigth of a 33 was 386,000lb and the 44 was 348,000lb.
