Safety Hood, (Wide Nose)
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, December 31, 2005 1:54 PM
When did CN start using the wide nose design, and what model of engine was it on? I am assuming that CN was the first but maybe it was another line?

Thanks for any info

According to Donald C. Lewis in Rail Canada Volume 1, "This new wide nose cab with its three exits, toilet, hot plate and refrigerator first appeared on the C.N. as 2500, an MLW M420, quickly followed by the Diesel Division GM of Canada GP38-2 number 5560. The D.D. wide nose cab is slightly larger due partly to the frame on the GM locomotives being lower."

These units were built in 1973.

As I recall, the 5560 was actually delivered to CN with black cab numerals but CN quickly redid them in the correct grey.

Thanks for the info Colin. I am trying to keep my modeling to 1950s or early 1960s latest. So no Safety Cabs on my railroad.
