Locomotive Colors For BAR Railroad GP7
Posted by santaferailroad on Monday, December 5, 2005 6:03 AM
I would like to paint a geep7 in the Bangor& Aroowstoock Railroad. My Question is what color of paint do I need . It is hard to tell From the pictures that I have looked at. The paint jobs on the engines are so faded. Any and all answers will be appricated. santaferailroad

Which version? The original blue and light gray, the dip job blue, or the "circus" scheme?

BARs GP-7s would be correct in blue and light gray with a yellow stripe between. The solid blue was started about this time. Easier to paint. Either would be correct. When they were painted depended on when they were shopped. I do not have any firm information about paint job dates. The "circus" paint is after your time.

Thanks Chris, would the blue be the top or bottom of the locomotive? Mike

The grey is at the top of the locomotive, with the blue below. Atlas did a GP-7 years ago in the original blue and grey scheme.

Athearn recently did BAR F-3's (as did Intermountain: http://www.imrcmodels.com/ho/html/49115.htm). The colors on the F-3 are correct for the GP-7 locomotive in its original scheme. However, you need a picture of the GP-7 for the proper pattern for the GP-7.

On page 87 of "Railroads In The Pine Tree State Volume One", there's a good shot of a GP-7 in the original colors. Also page 104 of "New England Rails 1948-1968".

The NERail photo web site has hundreds of BAR photos. (so I didn't look thru them all at this time) But you should be able to find a photo of a GP-7 there for ideas about how to properly paint the geep you want.

Not if he wants to do the original paint scheme. However, if he wants to do a BL-2 in the original scheme, there are pictures of that.

Trust me. I looked.
