Strictly the classics--Lucius Beebe's "Steamcars to the Comstock: The Virginia & Truckee Railroad, the Carson & Colorado Railroad: Their Story in Picture and Prose," as well as "Legends of the Comstock Lode," "Comstock Commotion" and "Virginia & Truckee: A Story of Virginia City and Comstock Times" would be most helpful. There are a *lot* of V&T locomotives out there, unfortunately many are in brass...plus, a lot of the original V&T locomotives are available for direct reference, at the California State Railroad Museum, at Railtown, and at the V&T museum itself, which is the V&T itself!!

Lets not forget the Nevada State Railroad Museum, located in Carson City.

They have a lot of V&T equipment on hand.

I believe one of the two volumes of Kalmbach's "Railroads You Can Model" books had a chapter on the V&T, can't remember which one right now. They recently did a combined version of the books in one, not sure if the V&T is included in that or not??

Indeed they did, I think it was Volume 2...there is also a V&T track plan in "101 Layouts."

According to a search of the index it is in the combined version. BTW a search of the index of magazines above on V&T returned 127 hits.
Enjoy

years ago at a model railroad flea market i got an issue of Railroad magazine from 1950 that had about a 12 page article on the Virginia & Truckee. it even showed a picture of the end of line literally in minden or virginia city. end of the line literally was a pile of crossties piled across the end of track. i saw in an issue of the railroad press that the owners of the virginia & truckee tourist line in virginia city plan to eventually rebuild the line all the way to the former connection with union pacific. i believe the V&T now has about an additional 5 to 8 miles of track going westward from virginia city.

Get hold of a copy of Virginia & Truckee The Bonanza Road by Mallory Hope Ferrell. Also Midsize and Manageble Track Plans by Ian Rice has a V & T track plan.

oldschool,
I've been modeling the V & T for some years now. The only other suggestion I'd have it to locate old topo and Sanborn Fire Insurance maps. I have a few myself. Also I having been using a service on the net at http://local.live.com/default.aspx It an aerial map service. I've been using it to trace the V & Ts route exactly for my V scale sim. If you go to the Washoe City area you can even zoom in and see the remains of the old trestles in Washoe Canyon to the north of HWY 395!!

Hope this helps.

that ferrell book, mentioned above, is available at the nevada state railroad museum in carson city nevada for about fifty bucks.

it's model railroader friendly in that it has photos, and descriptions, and drawings throughout.
