The L&N used the grey with red letters from the time these cabooses were built until about 1970, when the road adopted the red with yellow letters. This scheme would be the norm until the 1977 introduction of the Family Lines paint scheme. During the 1970's, some of these cabooses were renumbered into 2- and 3-digit number series to reflect their assignment to local or transfer service.
