Matching D&RGW yellow
Posted by Bullitt406 on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 4:08 PM
What's a good mix to duplicate the D&RGW yellow, either the early gold or later "Anscultz" gold.

thanks, Josh

Josh,
Welcome to the MR Forums !
It's a bit dated, but possibly you'll find something useful in Bill Havrilla's mixes at the Shaw's Web site:

Scroll down to the bottom.

I know Floquil and Polly Scale make DRGW Yellow. I am assuming it is a close match, although the DRGW Orange I bought seems a bit light.

Those paints aren't even close to the Grande "Gold" of the 50s and 60s. I found some spray paint at home depot that was close but not close enough. I'll try mixing some stuff later although I usually over mix things.

Josh,
Had some more thoughts. You could contact the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden:
http://www.crrm.org
and see if they can help. There used to be a club in the basement, but don't know if they're still active. Possibly there may be an article in Bob Brown's Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette. Use the Index of Magazines on this page to search for article citations.

The club is still there in the basement. Although it doesn't seem as well taken care of as it was say 10 years ago.

The amusement park was moved to the main yard, like children would play there.

They no longer display the burning building with the fire trucks.

They have a crappy BN locomotive pulling some mixed freight instead of the smooth running Amtrak train as before.

But anyway thanks, I didn't think of calling the museum for a paint mix.

hi Josh,
Well you kinda shot down your own question as you write about "D&RGW yellow" but then ask about Anschutz 'Orange' which is a 1980's time and paint sequence.

Grande Gold and Anschutz 'Orange' have nothing to do with oneanother as you rightly state "aren't even close to the Grande "Gold" of the 50s and 60s". I'm not sure either you can judge these piants when you are asking the question [}:)].

However the modellers colours are close enough in the eyes of the beholder- for specific info trip over to http://www.drgw.org/ and check out the Paint Schemes. There are descriptions and time frames and loco types applied but not many actual colours shown- so you will have to research for actual prototype shades to create your own.

As my original post asked I am looking for either a mix for the early 50s/60s Grande Gold (yellow) or the newer Anschultz Ski Train Gold (orange).

The early diesels had two color chades. Dulux Ochre (1941-1945) and Duco Imitation (1946-circa 1951). Even the same consist could have different shades of the paint.

After 1951 it became Aspen Gold, which is what the famous narrow gauge 268 was eventually painted.

Later it became Kansas City Gold, about 1984 and only used to mid 1985. It is a very dark orange color, especially side by side to the Anschultz Orange.

About the same time, however, Anshultz Gold appeared and the new SD50s were delivered in that color.

I know what I am talking about so thanks for the inadequate reply to my question.

Josh,
Perhaps it is just me, but I wonder what color the chip on your shoulder is. To paraphrase an old saying, "You'll catch more answers with honey than with vinegar."
This is a hobby, and I don't think Dave or any of the other responders thus far were trying to insult your knowledge or intelligence. We try not to "flame" each other on this forum.

Josh,
According to this article, cited in a keyword search at the Index of Magazines:

Paint Shop: Rio Grande F7 locmotives in N scale Model Railroader, June 1996, page 128 ( D&RGW, "DANNEMAN, MIKE", DIESEL, EMD, F-UNIT, F7, PAINT, PAINTSHOP, ENGINE, LOCOMOTIVE, N, MR )

". . . Accu-Flex no 16-62 D&RGW Gold, the Rio Grande called it Aspen Gold . . . ." Translated to 2005 terms that is Modelflex 165-1662 DRGW Gold in the 2005 Walthers catalogue.
