This is for the Canadian Pacific modelers on the Forums. I recently got an Athearn 50' plug door boxcar Bev-Bel painted for newsprint service (80000 series cars). (I have a printing plant on my 70s era Eastern Montana-set layout. I know that the Athearn car isn't an exact match. I can live with the door difference but I am planning to put short ladders on the left side of both sides to fix that problem.)
I am looking to put reweigh data on it as I have seen on some prototype pictures I have found (i.e. http://canadianfreightcargallery.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=cp80371&o=cprail). I have been unable to find a CP decal set that has dimensional data that I can use to replicate the idea on my car. I have checked both Microscale's and Highball's websites with no success. As usual, any suggestions would be most welcomed.

I figured one of our Canadian members would be able to get me in the right direction. In looking around at the site, I think I found the correct set. I did send them an email to double check if the set in question is the right one.
I've never heard of this. Was the Newsprint Service car a Canadian thing only?

Unless the intended model is strikingly different than these, I think I would be inclined to just get one of these cars instead of doing all the work on the Athearn model, and use the Athearn car for something else.

I'm not certain, but FRRYKid's modelling era may be more related to the car that he's using, rather than the more recent versions shown in your link.Eastern Canada had lots of paper mills, and lots of locations to harvest pulpwood...I recall seeing trains of them running through town here, on their way to a nearby papermill.

Could be. But he did say 80000 series which is the series the P1K model is in.

This is of interest to more than just CP or Canadian railroad modelers. Significant cuts of Canadian newsprint cars made their way into Wisconsin on the C&NW and down to Chicago presumably to supply paper for the Chicago Tribune. The reason I know this is that this train, which I think ran daily, derailed in my hometown of South Milwaukee WI in 1962 and the resulting wreck, of which I have acquired some photos, shows Canadian 40' boxcars strewn around the landscape. They were the first cars in the train which suggests that upon arrival in Chicago they were given a high priority for delivery to the Tribune's printing plant in downtown Chicago. Newsprint cars were in dedicated service (in addition to being labled as newsprint cars I think the doors were marked with yellow) because they had to be among the cleanest cars, with zero leaks in the roof so they were tightly coopered, and the fewest nails and other protruding things on the interior walls and floors to snag and damage the load.
The famous Milwaukee Road "Beer Line" in the City of Milwaukee also saw newsprint cars because the very last customer on the line was a newsprint warehouse and dock. The CNW got that business away from the Milwaukee Road when the Beer Line was abandoned, and the newspaper built a new warehouse closer to the harbor district. A curved warehouse with a curved siding -- a neat feature for a model!
US only? Not sure. I have read that Bangor and Aroostock potato cars were used in newsprint service during the offseason for potato harvesting and shipping. A similar need for cars that were clean and did not take on an odd odor that could be transmitted to the load. But obviously not totally dedicated to newsprint service. I think I have seen Vermont RR boxcars that were also labled for newsprint service, and quite possibly the Rutland had some as well back in the day.

Interesting I have that exact same car however mine says RailRunner Custom Cars on the box instead of BEv-Bel And your car number CP 80477 mine is number CP 80472
Also have a 40' box from a H&D Hobby in Calgary it uses the CPR block letering and has the newsprint service only car # 58739 I don't think this car ever existed in real life
there was a yard just west of downtown Chicago to feed the Tribune presses. i am guessing at least 50 cars a day all Canadian. With the traffic only a 1 second look from the expressway was possible but CNW had a switcher there 24/7. most neswsprint comes from Canada since pine trees are the main pulp source for newspaper.

The Cleveland lakefront had sidings for both the daily papers, The Plain Dealer and the Cleveland Press. I remember my dad pointing out to me that those box cars had huge rolls of newsprint that were delivered to the presses.
I don't know how many cars a week were traded, loads for empties, but there was always activity around there. The Press got cars off the NYC and the Plain Dealer was serviced by the PRR at a siding at E. 18th St.
I understand many papers relied on "just-in-time" deliveries as there wasn't much storage space for the huge paper rolls.

I confirmed that the set in question has the information that I needed and it has been ordered. (Cost wasn't too bad either. Ended up about what I pay for a decal sheet on this side of the border.)

Other railway that extesnively served paper mills also had cars that were dedicated to paper service.
Forestry products is a HUGE export from Canada, so there were lots of groups of cars built exclusively for paper service.

When I got the set and started "digging" into the set and what was on the car, I found that the scheme on the car doesn't quite match the decals. (It's close but a lot of the printing is the wrong size. Of course, the car itself isn't quite right, but it's close enough.) Rather than fully reletter the car, I will redo the road number and the relevent dimensional data. That seems to be the best compromise to me.
