GN SD9 Detail
Posted by GN EB fan on Friday, March 19, 2021 11:57 AM

As a modeler of GN trains I was looking through the excellent books "GN color pictorial vol.1-4" for details and their position, e.g. horn, antenna ... On the SD9 long hood there is a detail, covering partly the third window of the ventilation grid. I try to attach the photo. For long time I was looking for the meaning and name of this detail, with no result. Can anybody help? Can one purchase this detail, e.g. from details west?? Otherwise I would make it from a piece of styrene.GN SD9 #586

I know little of the GN's peculiarities, but those look like vents or exhausts of some type.

I looked it up and it's just what I expected, an exhaust for an engine heater.  There's a reference to it HERE...just scroll down a bit to read it.

EDIT:  By the way, Welcome to the Model Railroader Forums.  Your first few posts are under moderation, so be patient, as you'll soon be allowed to reply.

BTW if we're talking about the fire-extinguisher shaped tube over one of upper vents on the long end, note that it's over the 2nd vent not the 3rd...if you're counting from the front. Wink

Earlier, I was searching different sites to see if I could find a better view of that exhaust stack.

It seems most of the GN's SD9s had what appears to be an outer hood over the vents you usually see.
