Industries on the UP between Sherman and Borie?
Posted by bja103 on Monday, March 30, 2020 7:32 AM

Dear all,

I am in the process of constructing a multi-deck model railroad depicting two sections of the UP Transcontinnental route between Laramie and Cheyenne in the 1950s. The middle deck contains Dale Junction, and the upper deck tracks 1 & 2 somewhere between Sherman and Borie. My original intention was just to have the upper desk as plain track to simply watch the trains go past, but I'm now wondering if I might be able to add a bit of visual and operation interest.

To that end, could anybody tell me if there were any forms of industries location on tracks 1 and 2 between Sherman and Borie that I could potentially include on the upper deck? Perhaps something with a passing siding so that a local freight, originating from my storage yard that represents Laramie and Cheyenne, could stop at and switch whilst trains thunder past on the main?

Thanks!

I don't think there's much at Borie.  There was a dispatch tower for the Borie cutoff,  and a section house and siding at one time, but if it wasn't the end of the earth, you could see it from there.  See http://www.wyomingtalesandtrails.com/cheyennetivoli9.html

Thank you both for your replies.

I did use Google Earth to follow the route and the only thing I could find was Granite Canyon Quarry, which is not really what I had in mind but has given me an idea for an online industry on the layout for the future.

Having looked through various books, I have found photos of mixed trains that originated in Cheyenne. Whilst they wouldn't have reached Dale Junction, a little modeller's licence would allow me to run something over Sherman Hill, perhaps on a diversion...?

And that's the company ballast pit, as opposed to a typical model industry.  It could still add some operating and visual interest.

Very interesting to know, thank you!  I am certainly going to look at modelling it, even if it's just an interchange siding next to the main to simulate the traffic flow.
