What is the Shade Of Green Paint Used On The Tenders, Running Plates And Cabs Of CNR Steam Locomotives? I am looking for the best shade of green used.

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on the fourms. I am new to the hobby, and a project idea I have to to add DCC & Sound, super-detail, and to improve overall the appearance several Meheno made Canadian National steam locomotives that where featured in the various "Presidents Choice," train sets that where sold in the Super Store Grocery retail stores in the early 2000s. My first train set was the Bullet Nosed Express, which as one of them that featured the "Bullet Nosed Betty," being the CNR Mountain Class #6060.

The K-5 CNR Hudson, and the CNR U-F-1 Mountain class, like their real life counterparts are painted green on their running boards, cabs and tenders. The green paint that Mehano isnt accurate, and I have to ask what is the recommended modeling paint I would use for the parts painted in green.

I see Rapido has released their own modeling paints called "Protopaints," but I cannot find a acutal green similar to that used on the actual CNR #6060. I am not ready to start this until I get some modeling experaince on my hands, but if anyone knowladge in these locomotives & their prototypes could recommend the best shade of green that best matches was used on the real ones?

I undnerstand the colour would fade as time went on, and the colour would very from the paint shops doing the pant job, but any best shade of this green is better then none. Hope you enjoyed my post.

The colour which the CNR used was known as Green #11.  Scalecoat offers a version of it, but the best one I've used was SMP's Accupaint, labelled as CNR Green #11.

I don't own any of CNR's green-painted locos, but have painted a number of them for a friend, including this Hudson...

I've also done a lot of CNR passenger equipment for that friend, and for myself, also using Accupaint...

...and also use the same colour on my freelanced passenger roadnames, too...

.../and on diesels painted for both myself and others...

While Accupaint is no longer made (I bought-up as much of it as I could find), it's now available, in a slightly modified form, under the brand name Tru-Color Paint.

I've not used it, but it's similar to Accupaint, and comes pre-thinned.  I never liked Accupaint for brushwork, but it was excellent for airbrushing.

I apolgize for the late reply. I very much to apprciate the information you have given from your experiance. I am a bit disapointed there where no other comments other then yours and my reply, but thats just how some posts do. I will look into those paint options.

Wayne's responses are usually so thorough that the rest of us just have nothing else to add!  I can only say that I use Rapido paints on a regular basis and it's top notch. It's acrylic, which I have a preference for. It is also premixed for airbrush use, which some like and some don't like. You can actually use a brush to apply it for touch-ups, you just need to add extra coats to get the desired colour. I typically use an airbrush, so I like the premix option. As for the colour, as you mention, the prototype faded a lot under the sun. Based on the photos, it was all over the map depending on the age and conditions. I have a Mehano CN Hudson, and the green does not really match my Rivarossi cars - if I was to repaint, I would try to match the colour of the cars that will run behind the loco. You might have to buy or mix a few times to get it right...
