Ed, It seems to be a MEC (possibly also B&M) designation for the feed water heater.  By deduction and with the information you provided and with information from steam locomotive.com,  I suspect that the EK-39 designation listed in my MEC Locomotive Data book is a Elesco type K feedwater heater.  I can only begin to guess at what the 39 means.  May be a question for B&MRRHS.
