Surprised to see the Road Caboose thread still kickin.
Kevin I like the side door cabooses as well and the nifty one you posted. I'm glad I'm modeling the transitional era with so many choices of Cabeese.
I grew up in the Burlington Northern era when they still had them. I am one of those goofy people that enjoy being stopped on the road to watch the train go by. I must say I'm always disappointed when the end of the train comes and it's just the GPS blinking light and no caboose
Ed, that little stubby Caboose was unique and rather small. I never seen one of those. I'm sure the thing was huge to that little boy when his mother put him on it. Probably the highlight of his day.

As often as I have flown, I always wondered what it would be like to be in control of flight. Perhaps next time around. Maybe I'll get lucky and be reincarnated into an eagle in my next life

You cannot tell in the picture, but there were a pair of homeless people living in the caboose. Right after I took this picture they emerged from inside, and I got out of there quickly!
I always turn around and go back for a picture when I see a caboose on a road trip. My wife has said "What the hell are you doing" or "Not again". My reply is we're on a road trip, do you have any appointments, we have no schedule now so no hurry here
It was probably a good idea you got out of there quick Kevin. Those homeless people may have thought you were affiliated with some kind of government agency taking a picture of the situation. Maybe that's why they came out so fast, they probably didn't care for you too much

Ed: I tried to build a model of that boxcar/caboose many years ago, but I could not get it to work.
The trucks just do not have room to swivel behind the steps. I even tried using plastic trucks and shaving off the journal boxes, still would not track properly.
If I knew how to make it work mechanically, it would be a great looking caboose to build a model of.

I cheated and bought a brass model of a B&O War emergency caboose:

These were made from former stock cars but lack the unique pressed-steel boxcar ends. Neat to see the variety, though
Your B&O caboose looks a lot more "Do-able" with the steps coming straight down the side rather than the traditional caboose steps on the prototype picture you posted.
I will have to give this project another go with that modification.
Someday... I have so many projects to do.

Kevin you could model that Caboose with all your talent. You just gave up too soon as I did with many of my models on the back burner. Some sort of bump out before the steps go down. I bet you give it another whirl
I only have one bump out caboose I acquired in a trade with my brother. It's a more modern version of Ed's B&O. My brother got a Mesabi arrowhead 3 Bay Hopper in the trade. It was one of my favorites.
Love this caboose. I need to replace the Rapido trucks with MT of course.

I do not know. All the windows were covered with white paper. My best guess would be a snackbar based on the tables that were nearby.

Nice string of Cabeese South Penn. I counted a dozen. All the colors reminded me of the 302 Boss rally in California.
That is a nice Fixer-Upper Ed. I could use a caboose like you got for a cabin in northern Minnesota. Grab your tools and I'll grab mine and I will meet you in Cleveland with my Lumber Truck on Friday. I'll just have to figure out how to get it back to Minnesota when we Get-R-Done. Oh Well, ... I'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

This has all been surprising railroad news to me. I'll be keeping that picture with the other ones and texting them to my brother tonight. He will appreciate it more than you know.
My brother is a DWP nut. I even bought him a DWP shirt, he wears it all the time. For Christmas I gave him a DWP RS11 number 3606. He said thank you too much, that's how much he liked it.

That's why I always stop by and visit this Caboose I started the thread with.
It was restored properly. It isn't a bunch of paint over paint or any rushed slapped together hodgepodge. She was restored well by Craftsmen, not a bunch of hacks.
I just realized that I do not have a single picture of a caboose taken here in Florida.
I cannot ever recall seeing a caboose on display.
There are a few locmotives around, but I know of no cabooses.
Strange. When I cross the border to Georgia they are everywhere.
