Amtrak 80s-90s -- Amlounge and dinette on same train?
Posted by Autonerd on Friday, July 5, 2019 9:16 PM

Hi all -- I'm putting together a freelanced Amtrak Phase III train, with mostly heritage equipment. Couple of coaches, couple of sleepers, couple of MHCs, and a couple others.

I own a Walthers Amfleet II Amlounge -- would that car have been the only dining option, or could it have appeared in combination with a Horizon dinette or a Heritage diner? (Guess what, I own both.)

Thanks -

Aaron

I've ridden the Lakeshore Limited quite a few times out of Cleveland, both east and west. There was often an AmCafe a few cars ahead of the full diner.

The Broadway also had the ex-PRR twin-unit diners in service for a few years along with lounge and snack service provided in ex- B&O sleeper, grille lounges.

Amtrak has some pretty good resources on their website as far as how things were "back in the day"

Keep in mind, too, that deadhead cars were frequently cut-in behind the locomotives or sometimes tacked on to the rear. These cars were either being returned to their normal assigned terminals after being used for a special train or charter or being sent or returned for repairs or shop work.

Have Fun, Ed
