Turning an N&W 'Canteen'
Posted by WestIslandRon on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 6:37 PM

The Norfolk & Western attached extra water-only tenders - 'canteens' - to some of their A-class steam locomotives.  If the engine needed to be turned, was the canteen turned (separately, I assume), as well, or did it have water connections at each end?

Connections at both ends.

Just curious, but am I correct in assuming that the canteens were connected to the tender by couplers, rather than by a drawbar, like the tender was to the locomotive?

I added an extra tender, for water only, to my Bachmann 2-6-6-2, but for convenience sake, used couplers...

I had shortened the stock tender (USRA long version) so that the loco and tender, with the auxiliary one removed, would fit (just) on a 90' turntable.

Thanks, I thought that was the case.  I guess it would've been uncoupled and parked close by so that when the engine was turned, it would be re-coupled from the other end.
