N&W yard / Atlas ad in the back of Model Railroder
Posted by N.C.&St.L on Monday, April 8, 2019 4:41 PM

Back about a jillion years ago, the rear inside cover of every Model Railroader magazine had an Atlas ad, and pictured was the yard or shops at Norfolk and Westerns facilities at Roanoak, Va. I would love to see that ad, or just the picture. Anyone have an idea how to get there?

Do you subscribe to the digital archives?  If so, you can look at different issues, and find it.

Of course they only go back to 1934? the first issue, just short of a "jillion" years. Laugh

I happen to be referencing the Nov 1979 issue for a client project and the inside back cover is an Atlas ad with a 1955-era grayscale photo of a streamlined steam engine crossing diamonds at Roanoke. I have no idea how long it ran before or after that, but there is one instance.

That HAS to be it, thank you.  I just checked my old copies, and only go back to about 1985.  I will figure out a way to get there. This is a lot of help, and I appreciate it.

I'll have to take a look at the Archive and jog my memory.

In the meantime, have you visited the N&W Historical Society?

They have a huge collection of photos and drawings. Perhaps you can search there and order a print?

Here's a similar shot, in color:

Thank you Ed, and everyone.  That is exactly what I was looking for, and the color photo makes it even better. Perfect.

Ed's link is about spot on to the photo in the ad.  The only difference is the train is going the other way, other than that, it's perfect to page 187 of the Nov. 1979 ad.

Looks like a couple of tracks are long gone!  Lots of changes.  We know where the photographers that took the Atlas ad picture, and Ed's picture were standing.

FYI, that is the east end of the passenger station looking east. You are looking at N&W's famous East End Shops. The tracks bearing off to the right go east to Norfolk, the tracks bearing off to the left go north to Hagerstown, MD. The building right behind the RPO car is the Randolph Street Tower which controlled signals in the eastern half of Roanoke Terminal.
