Tank Trains
Posted by nealknows on Sunday, February 24, 2019 9:15 AM

Do the railroads still run them? I see some models being released with the cars using the hoses to go between them. I know in earlier eras they were used.

Thank you in advance to all who reply.

I still see plenty of them here in the oil fields.

I see tank car unit trains all the time, but I have not seen a"Tank Train" (hose connected) only in videos and photos.

Not sure if they are still in operation.

Here's a thread from Trains, in 2006 that discusses them, of course, it's an old thread.

I'm not sure about whether what I am seeing is a tank train, but there are a boat load of PROCOR tank cars located in the BNSF yard in Phoenix.  And NW of the city in Peoria AZ it looks like the tank cars, or at least some of them, are unloaded.  I think they are carrying some sort of fertilizer for the farms out in that area.  I have seen up to 20 tanks cars at that siding, and sometimes on ly 2 or 3.

I found this on google from a photgraph by Fred Wing. If you look at the right side of the tank car, there's a hose that connects to another tank car.

Athearn was releasing some of these, just never seen them in recent years. This is what I'm tring to find out..

Like I said early, of all the rail cams, etc, I watch, I haven't seen any.

If you go through the thread I linked to in my first post, there are lots of informative links and pictures, if you want to know more about them.
