EMD proposed F18
Posted by IA and eastern on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 7:11 AM

On F units there were four 36 inch fans for cooling so if EMD had built the F18 or F20 would there still be four 36 inches or changed to three 48 inch fans. Is there a drawing of these proposed locomotives that would show any changes. Gary

Here's an interesting thread from Trains.com you might want to check out, as they talk about diesels planed and not built.

http://cs.trains.com/trn/f/741/t/220181.aspx?page=7

It seams that the mechanicals from the GP18 and GP20 would be used in the proposed F18 or F20, which would be 48", the GP,s having a shrouded fan.

Are you thinking of coming up with an F18 or an F20?

Read through the thread, I don't know if plans even excisted, but it might be a fun search, if your in to locomotive detective work.

Preston Cook wrote about that on page 35 of the F-unit issue of Classic Trains Spring 2015. He writes two paragraphs in what is titled 1958 Super F units? "EMD did preliminary design work on and prepared specifications and pricing for a final two F-unit models." Cook wrote.

The Cotton Belt explored the possibility of upgrading its FT units with turbochargers. The end result was that all 20 Cotton Belt FTs were traded in to EMD in 1960-61 on an equal number of GP20s. The month of December 1959 saw the sunset of Southern Pacific's F3 to F9 upgrading program at Houston Shops. And also likely the end of Cotton Belt's F7 upgrading program at Pine Bluff Shops.

The later group of FP9s built for CNR had a pair of 48" fans.  Late production GP9s were the same.

The last ten FP9s for CN were built on GMD order C-242A between May 14, 1958 and July 9, 1958. These were road numbers CN 6533-6542. There was a concurrent F9B order C-243B for seven units, CN 6631-6637. Data from Diesel Division Serial Number Record.

Other very late members of the F9 family were C&S #700D, FW&D #750A, EMDX #462, Wabash #1141A, Saudi #1505-1508, New Haven #2030-2059, and the FG9 demonstrator EMD serial #22006. All of those units may reveal clues to what design features would go in to an F18 or F20.

New Haven 2030-2059 were of 1960 vintage with 36 inch radiator fans and 567D V16s giving them 1800 traction HP, same as the GP-18s.  The last new-construction F unit built in the USA was NH 2059.

I could see a proposed F18 or F20 having a lot of the same physical characteristics as the F9.

Also, I should note that the third 48" fan is present only on the units that are equipped with dynamic brakes.
