PTC Infrastructure?
Posted by Metro Red Line on Sunday, March 25, 2018 12:13 AM

I know that Positive Train Control (PTC) receiver domes can already be found as aftermarket detail parts for locomotives, but what about the transmitting infrastructure? Are there PTC towers along railroad ROWs? What do they look like? Or is that all done by satellite?

The CN main that is close to me, has been going through lots of changes, and as they install new equipment, different types of towers show up in the line side structures.

I modeled these on my railroad, and here's one type of tower I observed:

The tower is behind the signals.  And another type of tower is:

It's between the tank car and thebox car, and it's a lattice type tower with 2 different types of antennas on the top.

I can't find the pictures I took of the prototypes.

Mike.

Here's a simple look at how PTC works.

https://www.up.com/media/media_kit/ptc/about-ptc/

Each signal location has a PTC tower and antenna.  Along the UP, at least in my area, each PTC tower has it's own relay house.

With all the infrastructure being built, UP has become an internet provider.  http://www.breezeinternet.com/

Those towers are what I have seen on the UP out here too. They seem to have most of them set up at control points alongside sidings.
