Looking for Suggestions on a Winter Hatch for a FM Trainmaster for HO
Posted by MArmstrong88 on Friday, March 2, 2018 2:04 PM

Hi, I'm hoping to get some input and suggestion for a realistic-looking winter hatch for a FM H24 66 Trainmaster dummy loco that I recently acquired. The model is currently unpainted, but I plan to convert it into a Canadian Pacific stylized loco, and want to track down a decent looking winter hatch for it.

I've already discovered the assortment of winter hatches available from Minatures by Eric, but none of the options are specific to the Trainmaster, and I don't want to go through a series of trial and error purchases, assuming I can find a supplier with all possible addon details available, until I find the right fitting winter hatch in terms of size and realism.

Thanks,

Do you have pictures of the real hatch? If so, what is different about it?

.

I belive the trainmaster has its cooling fans inside the carbody, unlike EMD units where they were on the roof. Would the winterization "hatch" even be visible?

.

I understand the hatch is really just the housing for an air damper. It is not complicated in operation.

Here and Here

I actually found someone else looking for something similar on another forum here. I linked it because someone provided photos of the hatch on the actual trainmaster.

Thanks a lot, that does help, as I think I may be trying to get too "exact" with this model. First of all, I don't have a layout yet, and until I am able to gain a semi-permanent location with space to build a small layout, I'm attempting to keep the dream alive by working on models until then.

I originally wanted to do a somewhat realistic layout, in terms of time period and railways, with the exception that an HO layout in a small area will likely need to compromise heavily on scale and detail. I also wanted to make it a not so realistic layout with a few unusual additions and easter eggs, so being obsessive about making sure I'm modeliing a CPR Trainmaster with a winter hatch, since "most of them have it" when, yes, I could just model it after 8900.

Thanks,

...a realistic-looking winter hatch for a FM H24 66...currently unpainted...a decent looking winter hatch for it.

I just had a quick look at these locos.  It looks like there's at least two versions of these hatches:  one where it goes out over the fans, and one where it doesn't.

If you can't find a pre-made one that suits you, it looks pretty straightforward to build your own out of styrene.  The toughest part might be finding a decent photo--a "down-on" view.  Perhaps there's enough detailed side views to do without, though.

I doubt there's a screened opening, like on an EMD.  Perhaps, though, on the version that does go out over the fans.

The winterization hatch had a movable portion.  For winter it would slide forward and partially cover the fans.  In summer it would be moved back under the shroud to allow free flow of air.

It has already been mentioned that 8900 would be a good choice since it did not have the hatch.  It also is the only one with the fuel tank as found on the Atlas model; 8901-8920 had a somewhat different profile.  A challenge with the Athearn model is that it is of the earlier Phase I body with lots of louvres across the long hood and certain other differences.
