As a kid, during the Eisenhowrer administration, we go a glimpse of a big quarry on the way to my grandmothers. I lived in that are for 20 some years and never got more than a glimpse. Thanks to drones we can do better.
I believe the light rail train you see follows the old Ma and Pa rail line.

I was thinking of modeling a slate quarry for the narrow gauge road. I was just planning on a slope pulling cars up and down with a short curve inside or past the loading platform building.
Nothing to big, it might have a little yard next to it. I calculated about 16 slate cars will do plenty.

I have been thinking about it too (unlikely to do so) -- and my thought was to use the Bachmann On30 (or On 2 1/2) models for the actual 30 inch gauge that some quarry and contractor railroads used, not as a "sort of" surrogate for 36" gauge.
When the first HOn 2 1/2 trains were imported from Egger-bahn in the 1960s, MR ran a wonderful little article showing them used in a couple of quarry scenes. It is in the July 1965 issue of MR page 44. Go look if you have the issue or have the All Access Pass to the archives. That is what I'd love to try in On 2 1/2, with one of those little Porter 0-4-0Ts or 0-4-2Ts.

If the quarry is abandoned or flooded, don't forget to model some kind of steam locomotive partial view in the deepest part, crafted so that all those folks excited about the phenomenon can have an epiphany. Popular choices can be selected from threads on the subject appearing over the years on RyPN or material from Len Shaner
A crane boom sticking out of the water is a nice touch also.
