I have an oiley greasy ho locomotive, what do I use to clean it?

I have heard that Ronsonol lighter fluid or VM&P Naphtha is recommended for cleaning the finish on painted BRASS locomotives.  I've never tried it, though.  And I don't know how it would react to plastic.

More details are warranted.

 

For may things, dishwasher detergent and water work well.

None of my old locos are oily and greasy.

That means somebody, maybe a prior owner, was heavy handed with the lube or else they were stored in a hot attic?

Sounds like you might want to take things apart and clean the shells and the drives separately.   

Please don't start another thread, we can go with what we have, but this has precious little to do with prototype modeling.  Otte can move the whole thread if he deems it a problem.
