I am actually putting decals on two Tichy Train Group 10000 gal ICC Class 103 tank cars. Those decals are for UTLX.
When looking on the WWW for examples of prototype marking, I can see this marking on some tank car domes, either prototypes or models.
What was the purpose of this marking?
Was it applied on all tank cars of the 50's?
Was it applied on both sides of the dome or only one side?
If only on one side, which side, left or right?
Even with the WWW and Google it is not always easy to document cars of the 50's.

Modeling CNR in the 50's
Hello, Guy
I just looked for your stencil in my 1959 Manual Of Standard Practice from Association Of American Railroads.
It shows that stencil as being a "Manhole Closure Identification Mark".
ICC 20-(h) Identification Mark for approved manhole closure must be stenciled on each side of dome, or jacket if lagged, in line with the ladders and in a color contrasting to color of dome.
Be sure to have a new Xacto blade when you cut those 3/16" gaps in the stencil, Guy!
Hope that helps,

Ed,
Sure it helps. It's exactly the information I was seeking for.
Thank you very much.
P.S. I am not sure I will cut those gaps. I can't find my 1/87 Scale Xacto knife.
