Proper red paint for Erie bay window caboose?
Posted by Brammy on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 11:16 AM

Greetings,

I have an Erie bay window caboose I want to paint. I'm trying to figure out which one is best: Testors True Red, or Erie Lackwanna Maroon. I'm not sure if the Erie cabooses are that maroon color or not.

A quick google search yielded THIS and an equally quick look at a Scalecoat colour chart showed CP Rail Bright Red to be a pretty-good match.  It certainly doesn't appear to be maroon by any stretch of the imagination.

Thanks. I should have mentioned that I'm color blind so it's really hard to tell the variances in some reds.

It has been a while since I have painted this Dunmore caboose but I believe I used either caboose red or SP Scarlet red.

This one is a stock Athearn car.

B&O used a similar red that they called "Devil's Red" Model Master Insignia red is a good match for this.

Is there a particular paint brand that you prefer to use? Between the two colors you mention, the Testors true red would be the better choice for Erie.

Good Luck, Ed

Thanks.

I don't have a brand preference. If I could find a stock Athearn one I'd just get that, but alas, I can't.

EL Maroon is for the maroon parts of the EL diesel paint scheme. I believe some EL cabooses were painted in a scheme like the diesels, but the basic red cars used a bright red, as described by Ed (gmpullman).
