So I've seen others do this and I was wondering whether or not this is prototypical:
When the engine is running forward, the engine's rear marker lights turn on showing red.
And when the engine is running backward, the engine's front marker lights turn on showing red.
Is is right or should they be off?
Thanks

Markers mean the END of the train. They are displayed on the rear of the last car in the train.
If the engines are running lite, then the trailing end of the last locomotive will display markers.
If the engine is a helper on the rear of the train, then the trailing end of the last locomotive will display markers.
It the engine is a switch engine then its not a "train" and doesn't need markers.
In any other situation the marker lights on an engine will NOT be lit.

Ok thanks!
Ditto what Dave wrote...
Rules will vary by railroad and some use green marker lamp lenses where the yellow are shown here, per NYC RR.
*Steam locomotives are shown in this 1938 rulebook but the same rules would have applied for diesels.
Good Luck, Ed
