RR Crane Modernization

I was eyeing the 2/02 article in MR to use a DimiTrains craneI have laying around. However, I'm modelling a contemporary shortline, although it would like to have its own medium size hook on hand. This is just me, but something about that particular model makes it look like it's too small to be dieselized, so I have three questions. Have any of those 120 ton Brownhoists been deiselized and are any still in operation? (It seems I recently saw somewhere some that have been but their outward appearance was changed drastically to make it look like a box). Thirdly, and this may sound completely ridiculous but I'm curious, would it be possible to modernize a crane by placing the powering diesel motor on a the boom or trailing car and using the electricity generated by it to power electric motors in a renovated crane? Just another excuse to add another piece of MOW rolling stock to my layout but it seems like it'd be an interesting idea, although a bit wasteful for a railroad to actually do.

Trains did a whole issue on small cranes years ago. Check the index for the issue. I suspect it is early 80's but it might be farther back. It has all the information you are seeking as I recall.

I know Santa Fe had some derricks like the Dimi-Trains Industrial Brownhoist, and some converted to diesel. Don't remember which ones.
