Southern Railway Shay Locomotives no. 4000 & 4001
Posted by deltamech on Monday, November 15, 2004 6:19 PM
I recently learned that Southern Railway owned two shay locomotives. I am a fan of Southern Railway and I would like to know where the two shays were used and where I could find a picture of one or both of them. Were they used for logging or switching....?

Thanks

According to Harold Ranks and Shelby Lowe in "Southern Steam Power", two class "D" Shays were purchased in 1907 for use on the Maryville to Calderwood and Maryville to Walland Tn. branches. They were numbered 4000 and 4001. They were used by the Southern until 1915, when they were sold to the C&O. " Southern Steam Power" was reprinted in 2001, and has a picture of number 4001 taken in 1910.
Hope This Helps,

Thanks Tom

I appreciate the information. Do you know if "Southern Steam Power" is still in print and available? I would like to get a copy of it.

Thanks again

My copy, which is a reprint, was published by Little River Locomotive Company, PO Box 27, Townsend, Tn. 37882. I don't have a phone number for them. You might also check with the Little Choo Choo Shop in Spenser, NC. Their phone number is 800-334-CHOO or 704-637-8717. They may have both the reprint, which was published in 2001 and they sometimes have copies of the original.
Hope This helps,

Check www.shaylocomotives.com/frontpage.htm It lists Shays by construction number, original owner...SR #4000 & 4001 were cons. # 1874 & 1875. The site has a picture (small) of #4001. Also gives dimensions and history for both locos.

Remember: In South Carolina, North is southeast of Due West... HIOAg /Bill
