SD40-2 nose length
Posted by oarb00 on Thursday, September 11, 2014 7:39 PM

I know about the 120 Inch nose length on snoot nose SD40s carrying radio control equipment. But what is the significance of the 81 vs 88 inch nose. Is there a reason for the differance?

Thank you

IIRC, the original nose was 81".  When the chemical potties were mandated, the nose was increased to 88".  I think 116" was also built.

All EMD products had an 81" nose up to a certain point (around 1980??) in production whereafter they used an 88" nose.

Longer variations like 102" (some CP units) and longer "snoot" noses were custom orders for specific batches for various reasons usually related to radio control equipment.
