Hi All,
I'm building an abreviated CP Canadian in 1" scale for a friend in Canada. That's right, 1:12 scale. The cars are almost 7 FEET long.
I've already delivered the locomotives (an F7 A and B) and a few of the cars. Now I'm doing a Park series dome observation and 500 series dome lounge/coach.
But I need help. The interiors on the first four cars weren't critical because the cars operate outdoors and down at foot level. It's hard to see inside. But the interiors of the domes are right there in the open for everyone to see. And the observation lounge is pretty visible too. I'd like to get them right.
I've got The Passenger Car Library books, but they're in black and white. I've hunted around on the Interwebs but didn't find much info. I did find a couple of CP Rail ads, but I'm not sure if I can trust the colors in the illustrations (are the insides of the dome frames really Kelly green?). And I don't know anyone here in southern California who owns one of the Rapido trainsets. (I wrote Rapido, but got no response.)
So does anyone have any info on interior colors on the Canadian domes? Does anyone own a Rapido Canadian that they'd be willing to disassemble and take some photos of the interiors? Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks.
Joe
Hi Joe:
Neat project!!!
Don't give up on Jason Shron at Rapido too soon. He has just posted a note to everyone in which he mentions that Rapido is swamped big time. In fact he is looking for part time help as we speak so its not suprising that he hasn't been able to get back to you.
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Hi Dave,
Thanks for the note. I'll continue to hope Rapido will get back to me. It would be great since it really looks like they've done all the research. (And their HO Canadians are certainly beautiful. I got to see one of the first ones at the Sacramento NMRA show a couple of years ago.)
Hi, Joe
I have a book on The Canadian that has a few "colour Plates" but no interiors in color.
Here's some links to the Web Lurker's DOME main site that may help:

Each "Park" series car had a 4' by 20' oil painting mural that was unique to each car. It would be fun to try to duplicate that for your interior!
It may not be much to go on but it's a starting point.Good Luck, Ed
CP publicity materials from the late 50s show the dome interior, from the bottom of the windows up, painted a salmon-pink. From the windows down, interior surfaces were a fairly dark shade of blue. Seat upholstery was the same salmon-pink shade as the upper interior, with full-width white anti-maccassars across the top six inches or so of the seat backs.
Thanks, Ed and Dayliner.
Dayliner, are those publicity photos or illustrations? I have some other CP marketing stuff, but it's all illustrations and I don't know how trustworthy their color renditions are. Anything I can link to online so I can see the colors? Thanks.
Those 4'x20' paintings were commisioned by some of Canadas best artists of the time, majority were done by the infamous Group of Seven, whose paintings today sell in the many many thousands of dollars, many paintings were professionally removed and reconditioned and are preserved in Welland, Ontario , Canada.
This page might offer "a little" help.
