Semi-rig access gate
Posted by HO-Velo on Monday, April 7, 2014 8:41 PM

Hey,

Frank zstripe, you got your ears on?

I've got a spot on my layout with limited space where I'd like to add an access gate for HO scale semi-rigs and bob-tails.  I've got enough room for a 14 HO scale feet gate.  Would a gate opening of 14 feet provide enough clearance in the real world of trucking?

thanks and regards,  Peter

Generally, the maximum allllowable width of trucks is 102.36 inches  (2.6 meters) per Federal Highway Administration regulations.  Some safety appliances such as mirrors may extend beyond this dimension. This is the width allowed on Interstate Highways.  Wider vehicles rerquire special permit. .

The individual States, counties or cities may have lower maximum limits on other roads.  As low as 8 feet.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Peter,

If I didn't have my ear's on, my glasses would fall off my head.Big Smile I've been running under the radar and around the coops, but 14ft is fine, single entrance / exit. 13ft6'' is max height without permit, highway, street running. Max 10ft wide without permit. Night time, daylight running, all apply to permit running, primary/secondary roads also apply. Lot of stuff to know. But in your case, good to go.

Have Fun!

Frank
