Hi there,

Sorry, I cannot see the picture you attempted to post (perhaps it's just me and another member can see it). But I will take a shot in the dark to attempt to help (however, refer to your previous thread on this subject to see links to pictures of this locomotive). Canadian Pacific SD40-2 #5836 was delivered in the red "Pacman" scheme. The "Pacman" scheme refers to the sideways black triangle in a white 3/4 circle painted on the rear of the locomotives long hood. The locomotive itself was painted overall red with a white "CP Rail" along both sides of the long hood and white road numbers on the cab under the side windows. There were approximately five white stripes on the extreme front of the nose painted in a diagonal pattern. No white stripes (no stripes whatsoever) were/are painted behind the crew cab. The only other stripes for this scheme were white and black diagonal stripes painted at the extreme rear of the long hood, directly behind the "Pacman" logo. You can see pictures of this locomotive linked in your previous thread on #5836. Sorry...aside from this, I don't know what else to say Tongue Tied...

Good luck and happy modeling!

Don.

P.S...I stand corrected, #5836 did wear white diagonal stripes on the front cab face and the front nose at one point...but these stripes did not get painted on the rear of the cab...black and white stripes were still on the extreme rear of the long hood behind the "Pacman"...sorry about that...Whistling

OK, this needs to be cleared up.

There were 4 or 5 variations of the CP Rail "Action Red" paint scheme with the Multimark (that fans have later named "PacMan").

The series that 5836 is part of was built in 1974 and would have been delivered in a version with 5" wide stripes (white on red background) on the nose and cab front, and matching 5" stripes on the hood rear (white on BLACK background) and the large, full-height multimark.

And here's a pretty picture from 1976:

Sure it doesn't show the back but there's enough published information about CP Rail paint schemes to say with certainty that there are 5" wide stripes on a black background back there.

And if you're asking about the rear of the CAB, no CP Rail units ever had striping there. Only the front of the cab, the nose and the rear of the hood.

5836 was later repainted with the smaller multimark, and 8" wide stripes on the nose (and not on the cab front) and hood rear, but you were asking about the as-delivered paint. It's important to note that photos showing the wider stripes and smaller multimark are NOT original paint for this unit.

As delivered (notice the white stripes on the cab front/face. These are not duplicated on the cab rear):

After a repaint (notice the lack of white on the cab front):

The tail end of the long hood (behind the "Pacman" logo"):

And just to be clear, the rear photo above is post-repaint, not original paint.

Chad, what's your modeling time frame? IIRC from seeing other photos you've posted it's mostly modern era ICE/DME? The CP Rail with the 5" stripes and large multimark was the first CP Rail paint scheme in 1968, and was applied through the early 1970s. It was replaced by other variations in the late 1970s. I'm not sure when the last example still in the old 5" cab face stripes was either repainted or scrapped, but this scheme hasn't been seen in many years. However some examples of the wider 8" stripes still survive today, mostly with the smaller multimark, but I believe two (maybe just one now) SD40-2s still exist with the original large multimark (but 8" stripes).

I believe the white cab face stripes lasted until sometime between 1980 and 1984/85 before the final units were repainted, scrapped, or turned into "B" units (with windows covered over and repainted). Here is a shot of #5706 in 1980:

Tail end of #5710 in 1984...can't see the face but I am guessing she still has her white cab stripes as it doesn't look like she's been repainted yet:

One more just for grins Big Smile. Here is #5717, still wearing the white cab stripes in 1980:

"Ladies and gentlemen, I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that both engines have failed, and we will be stuck here for some time. The good news is that you decided to take the train and not fly."

Additionally, #5717 doesn't have those cab stripes by 1987. So she was repainted sometime between 1980 and 1987.

Don & Chris;

Thanks guys for all the great reference material.
Chris, you are correct, much of what is model is 1995 to now.
But, I have a real soft spot for unique paint schemes, & leased units to break the color schemes up.
I do appreciate the feedback & will keep that in mind, & time appropriate.
Thanks again fella's!!
