For several years Rail Car Photos has been a very good source of RR photographs. Besides having a lot of photos it had a very convenient search ability.
Yesterday when I went to railcarphotos.com it had the message that the domain had expired on 6/10/2013. Does anyone know if this is a temporary situation or is Rail Car Photos gone for good?
It may be gone.
Most people don't realize that owners don't last forever. I'm facing the same situation, what happens when I'm gone.

The founder did unfortunately pass away from some sort of illness a few months ago. A couple of others were trying to keep it going, but they probably didn't know about the domain expiry coming up. I hope they're in the process of re-registering it and regaining control.

I suspect Chris is right. After Stan's recent death, the crew there has been operating things just fine...until the domain registration expired. This site is still there on a server somewhere, but the address just doesn't work right now is what's happening. There was no indication that they planned to do anything but carry on.
Typically with these accounts, you'll get an email advising to renew the registration shortly. Obviously, Stan's not around to answer the email. I'm uncertain how this will be handled, but I'd imagine it'll get sorted out shortly. I'm a regular user, so will try to let folks here know as soon as it is available again.

An update. Decided to check locophotos.com, another of Stan's sites. It's up and there's a message thread that indicates the domain registration has been paid at some time since the outage began, just not taken effect yet online. Sometimes these DNS things take a while to propagate, although I'm not certain the domain registration would affect that anyway. So keep trying, should be back soon.
