That would  be a train that only runs a couple times a year. If that.  Most engines are delivered in groups of 2-4 engines on regular trains.  Most railroads don't buy that many engines in one whack.  And running them in a special train is very expensive.

These export units were all shipped in dedicated trains:

These were built at the old EMD plant in London, Ontario, and exported via the port at Halifax, Nova Scotia. These particular units would have only been seen on this single route.

Heh, thanks Chad. Sadly, with the closure of the London plant these shots are no longer possible. For each of those trains above I knew they were coming via a source on the local shortline railroad that served the plant.

Note that domestic locomotives bound for US roads were handled in regular trains as suggested by others above, a la:

Chris,
it's too bad this had to change like that, must have been some interesting rail watching.
Thanks again for sharing!

On a tangentially-related issue, here is a photo of a newly manufactured diesel locomotive being delivered from US manufacturer to Mexican railways.  Locomotive is not pulling a train but being moved as part of the cargo.  Texas Mexican Railway Joint Yard, Corpus Christi. (1970s?)  Occasionally two or three units seen together.

This photo is from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi /Bell Library Special Collections and Archives website, of photos I contributed to the archives.
