Started building ships during Gold Rush

First steel ships constructed on Pacific Rim

Still a large ship repair facility.

Not much railroad equipment shown, but 1973 USGS Map (Teraserver) shows extensive rail system serving various structures pictured on this Web site.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

San Francisco had an industrial belt line that used to run along the Fisherman's Wharf area--it is gone now, except for a little track down by the marina end. The San Francisco historic trolleys run over that right-of-way, though.

The "State Belt Railroad" there was a feature article with a trackplan in the April 1980 Model Railroader.
