UP Power car

In some photos I have seen of the Union Pacific Excursion or Passenger trains, there is a Power Car in the consist. Could anyone give me some information of their purpose, a place to find close-up photos, a model manufacturer, or enough information I can use to kitbash one?

I would guess the power car provides head-end power for train heating/aircon, lighting, etc. This would allow locos without HEP to be used on these trains - I understand they use a DD40AX in this way?

There are a couple of photos of UP power car #208 on the Fallen Flags site http://www.rr-fallenflags.org (go to the Union Pacific pages). This car evidently was rebuilt from one of the UP's300-series baggage-dormitory-boiler cars. The 300-series cars were rebuilt in the early 1960s from 6000-series baggage-dormitory cars.

Overland Models has announced a future production of car #208 in brass. The best bet for kitbashing would be to start with an American Model Builders UP #6000 baggage-dormitory car (AMB's kit #1010). Note that a 6-wheel truck is used under the (former) baggage end of the car, and a 4-wheel trcuk under the other end. Appropriate trucks are available from Train Station Products.

I know that the car they have been using lately for there excursion is called "howard fogg" after the famous painter that painted many Union Pacific paintings if I can recall right.

The car is the Howard Fogg and came from UP's 300 series Boiler Baggage Dormitory cars. The car is used to provide head end power for the UP's passenger cars and also provides sleeping space for the crew members of the train. There are two options. 1) to use Amerian Model Builders kit in conjunction with Train Station Products ACF/Pullman Standard core kit or to purchase Overland Models model of the Howard Fogg. Ch

Thanks for all the information. It gives me a good place to start.
I am trying to stay away from the brass models from Overland because I have an extremely tight budget. But sometime in the future I will hopefully be able to replace all my excursion rolling stock with Overlands models.

Another option is to purchase older brass cars from importers such as Cascade Models or Soho. These models are less expensive then the Overland Models
