masonjar, <br /> <br />The only washing of coal I am aware of comes when a mine sprays "oil" onto the coal to keep the dust down. It did not affect it's ability to burn in any way. <br /> <br />Modern day treatment of coal in compliance to modern day "Clean fuels" my also be simply oil sprayed coal. Keep in mind that coal leaves alot of ash which needs to be removed periodically.
