Baldwin RF16
Posted by SwampCreekRR on Sunday, November 25, 2007 8:03 AM

I have a couple ROCO Baldwin RF16's that I would like to put sound decoders into. My question is what did they sound more like, an ALCO or an EMD? Or, if anyone knows if they had 4-stroke or 2-stroke engines. That would give me at least a direction to go in.

Sorry if this seems like a repeat, I posted this on RailroadLine Forums also.

The Baldwin Diesels used the De La Vergne VO engine. It was a 4 cycle engine and the only recording I've ever heard of it at speed, it sort of sounds like an old radial aircraft engine.

Baldwin switchers idling sounded like somebody beating a slow cadence on a 55 gal drum with a rubber mallet (bung, bung, bung, bung, bung, bung.....).

Yes, a 4 cycle turbocharged straight 8. Westinghouse electrical equipment with good lugging ability. I agree with the other two posts on how they sound. I also have a ROCO RF-16,heavy aren't they ?    Joe

On the same site where the videos of Baldwin switchers are, they have a .wav file of a D&H shark starting up and sounding its 'blat' horns.
