mayandrew,
There are several sites on the Internet where track plans can be downloaded. There are also a ton of books with track plans or complete layouts presented in great detail. Any of John Armstrong's books will help.
If all you are looking for is track plans or basic how-to instruction, here are links to a couple of websites that might help:

http://atlasrr.com/

http://layoutdepot.com/

I have several links to helpful sites posted on my BRVRR web site. Some of which include track plans. The image of my track plan is on the site. Link is in my signature.

Remember its your railroad

checkout the katousa website; they have a number of plans there too...but use them with a grain of salt; not all of them really go together as shown. (As we discovered)

About 6 months ago there was a topic on here that I answered, with similar lines to your question.

A good starting point is this website: http://www.thortrains.net/

Good luck with planning, welcome to model railroading!

Go on Ebay and look for a book called 101 Track plans by Linn Wescott. I got one for around $4.
