So you could run the models with draw bars or replace them with knuckle couplers.

I believe his issue is specifically how you put a model coupler box on that particular kind of unit to get a Kadee at NMRA height on it.  There will be people here who can tell him in full detail, with pictures and other visual aids, probably from experience.

That won't be so I'll now out of this square dance!

I think it is a drawbar for connecting to a B Unit.

As in this example:

You could try a Kadee #34 or similar back there? It is an insulated coupler. If the height doesn't come out correct Kadee offers under- and over-set shanks as well. You would have to use a fastener other than the shoulder screw.

Good Luck, Ed

Ah, I didn't think of the draw bar.  That would be between the A and B unit only.  In their later years, many railroads replaced the drawbar with standard knuckle couplers.  I believe all of the FT's owned by the D&RGW were so converted.  So you could run the models with draw bars or replace them with knuckle couplers.

I think you are correct. I think it is a drawbar for connecting to a B Unit. Its just a bar with a circular hole at the end.  If I wanted to run the A unit by itself without a B unit, I'm trying to determine if I can replace that drawbar with a Kadee coupler.

Thanks

It is possible that you are looking at an EMD FT A-B set? Several brass importers — predominately Hallmark — used a drawbar (as did EMD) to maintain close-coupling between the A and B units.

The location of the trucks makes it difficult to install a standard draft gear at the rear of the A or front of the B unit.

Bowser/Stewart also used a plastic drawbar for their HO models along with Broadway Limited on their RF-16s.

Good Luck, Ed

kadee has a guide that shows you what coupler you need, if you can identify the make / model of your loco

How do I insert a jpeg file or png into a post?

When I select Insert Image it asks for source. File is on my C: drive. How do I reference it?

There are numerous stickies and threads on how to get an image into a post.

Kalmbach chose not to support upload or direct attachments (for a variety of reasons) so you must provide a valid URL (Internet universal resource locator) for the forum software to access online.

The easiest way to do this is join one of the free photo hosting sites, like Flickr, and upload the saved JPEG files there.  The photo hosting site will generate the required URL automatically and make it accessible to you.

You then can insert it in a post, either by inserting it as a clickable link or embedding it (following instructions from your chosen photo site for "BBcode")  Most of these involve somewhat arcane operations, but we have threads for that.

Sounds like a European manufacturer.  What is the brand?

Brass F7 engine with eye hook instead of Kadee coupler
Posted by ChrisVA on Thursday, September 17, 2020 1:29 PM

Newbie question about brass.

I see some brass F7 diesel locomotives with an "eye hook" at their rear instead of a Kadee coupler. Is this for hooking up a B unit? Can I somehow replace it with a Kadee coupler if I want to run the engine stand-alone instead of multiple units?
Thanks in advance
