I'll install sound decoders on my diesels, so the locos may do their own noise cancelling. Laugh

I'm assuming the reason you want sound decoders is to replicate sound as accurately as possible.  To do that, its best to try to reduce as much other noise as possible because other wise you might have to keep the sound volume turned up higher than what is desirable.  So if you want the sound at a reasonable level, it may matter some to try to think about the noise of the layout.

I always use 3/4 ply and cork roadbed and the sound is fine ' I enjoy the sound so much I mostly turn off my sound loco's just to hear the natural sound of my layout.

I do the same thing, it takes me back to being a kid when I always had a train running in my room on my plywood pacific while doing whatever else. I will often have a couple running on silent while I play my guitar.
