They did one I really liked using threaded bar stock as the vertical supports.

And it really works well on several levels (pun not intended).  Adjustments and changes are much easier.

Guide to helix and staging design is an Information Station PDF-download, and well worth the effort with a number of informative (past) Model Railroader articles.  There is also a volume two.  Note the tie-in of staging design along with helix design.
